About Us

We are trampers at all levels and enjoy day walks as well as multi-day tramps.
We are lucky to have the hills and mountains on our doorstep.

Tramping trips are a mix of day trips and weekend trips. Weekend trips range from easy walks and tramps using the Department of Conservation and other NZ huts to packing your tent and tramping to other not so accessible areas in Otago, Southland, Westland and South Canterbury. Trips are sometimes arranged further afield to take advantage of long weekends. Many weekends have either a 2 day tramp or a 1 day walk.

The Club meets every second month - see Contact Us for meeting details.
Any Club business is briefly dealt with at these meetings and the majority of the evening is taken up by speakers who usually talk about their photographs of recent trips both overseas and in New Zealand.
At the conclusion of the meeting there is time provided to catch up with each other and supper.

The Club publishes a trip list six monthly.
Each month the Club publishes a bulletin which details the trips to be carried out in the following month together with news and reports on the previous month's trips.

If you are a member of the Wakatipu Tramping Club you receive the following benefits
 - Trip List
 - Monthly bulletin which details coming trips and past trips
 - Affiliation to the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC) including a substantial discount on the DoC Backcountry Hut Pass
 - Receive the quarterly FMC Bulletin
 - Involvement in SAR (Land Search and Rescue) (optional)

Join (becoming a member)

We welcome new people in all activities.
Our members have broad ranges of fitness, ability, and experience.

If you're interested in joining, the easiest way is to meet us on a Tuesday club night.
There are always people present who can answer your questions and put you in touch with organisers of upcoming trips.

To start tramping you'll need certain basic gear, such as tramping boots, warm clothes, a waterproof layer and a pack.
If you're going away for the weekend you'll also need a sleeping bag.
Some of this gear can be hired in town, however some you'll need to buy or borrow from a friend.
A more detailed gear list can be found here.
